Title: CHE-01, Atoms and Molecules
Institution: Indira Gandhi National Open University, India

Level:

Degree.

Description:
The course on atoms and molecules explains the basic structural features of atoms and molecules. There are two blocks in this course. Block 1 has five units. In the first two units, the theories of atomic structure are discussed. In units 3, 4 and 5, the theories of bonding are explained.

In Block 2, there are four units. In unit 6, some of the physical methods which are useful in determining the structure of molecules are described. In units 7 and 8, some applications of microwave, infrared, ultraviolet and visible spectra with respect to the determination of bond length, moment of inertia and force constant of some molecules are explained. In unit 9, there is a discussion on some aspects of nuclear chemistry.

Block 1: Structure of Matter-I:
1. Old quantum theory
2. Wave mechanics
3. Electronic theory of valency
4. Valence bond theory
5. Molecular orbital theory

Block 2: Structure of Matter-II:
6. Molecular properties
7. Molecular spectroscopy-I
8. Molecular spectroscopy-II
9. Nuclear chemistry.

Assessment is by one assignment (30%) and a final examination (70%).
